"Olympus Has Fallen" And The New Patriotism Narrative

Posted on 05:13 by omprakash

It's sometimes so bizarre that I can't help think there is something more to it.

Just as "Olympus Has Fallen" -- a movie about evil Koreans bombing and taking over the White House -- does gangbusters at the box office, North Korea suggests, through a conveniently placed bulletin board in a war-room photo, that they are readying missiles for Washington, D.C.:

How weird is that? Does art represent life, or does life reflect art?

What is the psychological impact on an American citizen from watching "Olympus Has Fallen" and then having this news plastered all over our media right afterwards?

"Olympus Has Fallen" took in $30.5 million in its opening last weekend
Some might theorize that this makes the American people more fearful and paranoid -- but I would offer that the prevailing feeling throughout the public, at least according to social media, is one of gung-ho patriotic jingoism -- of the "well then we'll just bomb them into the stone age" variety.

I might also humbly suggest that such an instinctual and joyously defensive appeal to said patriotic impulse distracts the populace from such domestic issues such as financial crisis -- instead, giving people a shared threat to rally against. Some say that Kim Jong-un looks as if he just stepped out of central casting for a James Bond movie.

Let's look at the cast for "Olympus Has Fallen," for there are several actors involved who have subtextual meaning as it relates to discussion and their previous movie roles.

The film's protagonist is played by Gerard Butler -- who of course played the mighty warrior King Leonidas in "300." Leonidas is the ulitmate macho war-dude, rallying the "troops" to battle.

The president is portrayed by Aaron Eckhart, part of the symbolically-loaded Christopher Nolan "Dark Knight" trilogy. POTUS has the name Benjamin Asher, which has very Biblical overtones; both Benjamin and Asher are part of the Tribes of Israel.

One person the president in "Olympus Has Fallen" does NOT seem to allude to is our current president, Barack Obama. Often, movies such as this will choose an "analogue" to the sitting president. But this does not seem to be President Benjamin Asher's function. Asher seems to function as some sort of idealistic character straight out of the Good Book; functioning in what is essentially an Apocalyptic film as the representation of the United States as a "promised land" that needs defending from the Philistines.

HOWEVER, when Asher is incapacitated in the Korean takeover, Morgan Freeman's character, Speaker Allan Trumbull, is made Acting President. Freeman also played the U.S. president in "Deep Impact," alluding to the recent spate of asteroid paranoia that has recently filled the news.

While Freeman resonates both the President-During-The-Apocalypse symbol as well as a possible "stand-in" for our own president, I would also suggest that in the bigger scheme of things, he also resonates a paternalistic, transcendent, "God" figure (as he literally was in "Bruce Almighty).

And Freeman, of course, was also a figure in the Nolan "Dark Knight" movies, especially the third one in which his character was the creator of a bomb that Bane hijacks and threatens to use on Gotham; as Kim Jong-un threatens to do to the U.S. as present.

All-in-all, rather than being a true eschatological movie as "Deep Impact" or "2012," "Olympus Has Fallen" is more a narrative designed to rally the American public against the outside Enemy -- as the successful "Red Dawn" remake has done (featuring the North Koreans), as the upcoming movie "Iron Man 3" will do (with the Asian Mandarin as villain), and as the immanent movie "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" will do (swapping out a specific ethnic group for the generic evil of "Cobra").

In truth, we have moved out of the end-of-the-world cycle of films, spurred on by the 2012 prophecy, and are travelling into a "we can win this war dammit we are Americans!" phase; the phase of "let's bomb them into the stone age!"

And why is this? As I've mentioned before, this appeal to patriotism distracts the public from economic turmoil at home. It also more helpfully "defines" what it means to be a Patriot; taking control of the word and concept from various Constitutionalist groups etc. labelled as "fringe."

In short: this narrative, running through both news media and entertainment, attempts to push the United States out of the "paranoid," untrusting-of-government periods of the 70s, 90s, and 10s and into something more manageable. Witness the 80s and "Aughts" -- both eras where the U.S. have been threatened with, in the latter even hit by, attacks from abroad.

And if "Olympus Has Fallen" doesn't float your boat, you can check out the #1 movie in America, about cavemen.

Recession Superheroes: Impersonators and Millionaires

Posted on 09:48 by omprakash

This photo series by Nicolas Silberfaden, "Impersonators," features superheroes and other pop-culture icons literally "crying" over the economic crisis in the United States. Most of these seeming "cosplayers" are really celebrity impersonators who make their living posing for photos in Los Angeles...and are technically unemployed themselves.

You might recognize Superman, above, from the documentaries "The Reinactors" (2008) and "Confessions of a Superhero" (2007).  Christopher Dennis, perhaps more so than any other living actor, comic book creator, or Man of Steel enthusiast, currently contains the true Superman zeitgeist -- pounding the pavement extolling Kryptonian virtues, keeping his spit-curl jet-black, living in a small apartment crowded with comic book-themed collectibles, and choosing "superhero" as his official life-role.

every good American superhero knows to drink their milk
As textured rubber and military-style body armor replace nylon bodysuits and satin as the superhero costumes of record, Dennis and his fellow Hollywood "impersonators" get "priced out" of the game; who can afford a decent suit resembling Henry Cavill's upcoming movie Superman, for instance?

"Man of Steel": ribbed, for her pleasure
There might even come a time when the "classic" Superman costume design will be forgotten among the newest generations, the bright red-and-blue with the cape resembling no more than a naive glyph from another time.

Silberfaden's photo series also touches upon non-superhero icons as well, such as Rambo:

At which I could only think of my post "Twilight Of The Action Movie Gods." These classic heroes have been handed a pinkslip, victims not only of aging but changing times. They seem too vulnerable in their long-underwear and muscle-displaying wife-beaters. Even the original Robocop seems too quaint, his rebooted makeover giving him more of that military-grade Dark Knight look:

Batman with a Power Rangers helmet: the rebooted Robocop

And that is why there is one superhero you will never see in Silberfaden's photo gallery:

It took many decades, but Iron Man is the superhero of our current times -- Tony Stark has the good sense to be fabulously wealthy, and, unlike head-cases such as Bruce Wayne, is unashamed to be so:

Millionaire-as-superhero: it seems like a premise tailor-made for the Reaganite 1980s. In fact, during the  "meat" of that decade, there were no major/successful superhero movies (the Superman films and "Batman" sort of bookending those ten years at opposite poles). And I believe this is because nobody thought to make that "rich guy superhero" movie. Tony Stark in the comics was too busy atoning for his fiscal sins by fighting alcoholism.

This leads into my final point in this post -- I firmly believe we are stepping into another Eighties scenario. In such a climate, will a Superman movie (especially a "dark, gritty" one) really do well? Won't the Millionaire Superheroes (Batman, Iron Man, Green Arrow) plus the Patriots (Captain America) lead the day, complimented on the opposite side by radical/anarchist heroes the kind of which I don't know if mainstream comics are capable of producing anymore (though certainly it's the subliminal reason the "Watchmen" characters were dusted off).

In fact, if I had to guess, this is the next hero DC will reboot:

Now, there's a superhero for our times!

Twilight Of The Action Movie Gods

Posted on 09:42 by omprakash
The "Last Supper" for the Action Movie Gods
Warning: this post may contain too much testosterone for you to handle. Discretion is advised.

Our Movie Action Heroes™are rapidly aging:
Clint Eastwood, 82
Chuck Norris, 72
Sylvester Stallone, 66
Bruce Willis, 57

The type of America they represented is changing. The nation -- and the world -- is evolving. Evolution necessitates new heroes appropriate to the time.

But, to borrow a phrase from one of their own tribe, you'll have to pry the guns -- and the cultural hegemony -- out of the Movie Action Heroes' cold, dead hands:

"I would just like to say something, ladies and gentlemen. Something that I think is very important. It is that, you, we -- we own this country."
--Clint Eastwood to the Republican convention

"We’re at a tipping point and, quite possibly, our country as we know it may be lost forever if we don’t change the course in which our country is headed."
--Chuck Norris, "Dire Warning For America" Election 2012 video

A pertinent question for Eastwood & Norris is: who is this "we?"

"WE own this country."

"OUR country as WE know it may be lost forever..."

When they say "we," who are they really talking about?

Are they really talking about you, dear reader?

Norris: not a fan of, in his words, "Pro-Gay Obama"

Further -- in a current state of affairs where there is a mass shooting virtually every week, is all this gun-worshipping, jingoistic bravado juxtaposed with issues of "patriotism" and flag-waving and xenophobia and "us vs. them" really a good idea? When we have people talking of armed insurrection and "civil war" if Obama is reelected? Is having Dirty Harry say his famous catchphrase under a gigantic picture of him holding guns at the RNC a good fucking idea, given the present climate?

News Flash: "Fox News Obsessed Man Threatened To Murder Girlfriend For Being A 'Liberal'":
The deputy who arrested Kappheim said the man told him "he was very conservative, and his girlfriend was liberal and he felt he was going to have kill her."...The same deputy reported that documents found inside the woman's apartment that belonged to Kappheim led him to suspect he was "obsessed" with Fox News and the GOP, and posed a threat to others.
David A. Kappheim, who felt that his girlfriend had to die for being a "liberal."

Over the weekend we just had a case where a serial cyberbully/stalker went on a rampage sending "gang-rape" messages to virtually every prominent female in the comic book industry with a Twitter account. Mixed in with threats of sexual assault was talk of those darn "liberals," as well as a perceived bias against conservatives, men, Christians, and whites. While this man had apparently cyberstalked some of his targets for up to two years or more, something made him recently snap and decide to "unload" his hate in a massive way.

This next passage is from a video rant by "Hero Of The People" Alex Jones, which I've taken the liberty of adding some images to. With a prominent website and YouTube channel, Jones' stated mission is to "is to re-ignite the spirit of 1776":
"It is absolute total war. Economic, psychological, physical, spiritual...toe-to-toe with the Social Engineers. We can beat 'em if we get out of their mind-trick, recognize who they are, read their own white-papers and books where they call us degenerate, dumb scum that they're going to dumb down further, set up a control grid, and kill. Well not me and not my family...not without one hell of a fight. You asked for it, you're going to get one...

"...It starts with a war growl, it starts with gettin' fired up, staring at yourself in the mirror and showing some teeth and saying  I'm a human being and I have dignity, I'm gonna resist, I'm gonna start recognizing the propaganda, I'm gonna break free from it...

"...we're gonna organize, humanity is gonna come together....YAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!! WE KNOW WE'RE UNDER ATTACK!!! WE KNOW IT!!!! WE'RE BREAKING THE CONDITIONING!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!! GRRRRRRR!!!! WE'RE COMING FOR YOU, GLOBALISTS! (beats chest) GRRRRRRRR!!! COMIN' FOR YA! COMIN' FOR YA! WE KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!

"(calms down, wipes brow) I'm sorry...I JUST GET FIRED UP WHEN I THINK ABOUT WHAT THEY'RE DOING TO US AND HOW MUCH I WANT TO RESIST THEM...and how easy they are to defeat. (gasps for air) Excuse me. I think my testosterone is going up...this happens every time I start working out a lot again. I swam two miles this morning pretty hard...and ate a pretty big steak last night that's full of hormones and testosterone in its own right."

Steak: a traditional American meal, full of testosterone

So if you're wondering why it seems that recently every nutcase is coming out of the woodwork, deluging your Twitter feed with hate, equating Obama with Hitler or Satan, shooting up theaters and places of worship, stocking up on firearms, talking to empty chairs, getting arrested on conspiracy to take over the government and assassinate our President...

The Action Movie Gods are waning, and are holding desperately to their throne -- manipulating the masses as gods are wont to do. It's a virtual Ragnarok, an event which "Thor" star Chris Hemsworth -- who is also in "Expendables 2" and the upcoming "Red Dawn" -- would only know too well.

Actual EW caption: "Chris Hemsworth and his fellow high schoolers battle commies in Red Dawn"
Will Hemsworth successfully become a new Action God, part of a retro Eighties redux that will bring back Rambo, Rocky, Red Dawn, red-white-and-blue patriotism, a fear of "Commies," and a fatherly Republican in the White House?

And will steak -- a manly, high-protein, all-American food item -- become popular again, defying the agenda of the social engineer liberal communist eco-obsessed foreign-funded pro-gay yoga-practicing egghead interloper traitorous feminazi atheist folk who want to force-feed us soy and enslave us? According to this article regarding the upcoming food crisis -- probably not.
