Dark Blood: The Last Testament of River Phoenix

Posted on 09:59 by omprakash

River Phoenix in "Dark Blood"
It's interesting to me in that with the current media spotlight on "Doomsday Preppers" and other assorted individuals who chose to live off the grid, the 1993 movie "Dark Blood" is being finally released (albeit incomplete). River Phoenix's last film, "Dark Blood" is about a disaffected young man named "Boy" who lives by himself in a survivalist bunker in the desert, surrounded by weapons and assorted "voodoo"/occult items. A hapless couple lost in the area stumbles across Boy, and predictably all hell breaks loose.
Several points of interest, here.

1. This movie was made around the same time of a number of Federal sieges on "compounds" such as the Branch Davidians (1993) and Ruby Ridge (1992). So in a sense Phoenix's character Boy is the analogue for this sort of situation.

Twenty years later in 2012/2013, this has once again become a hot topic. Newtown shooter Adam Lanza's mother was deemed a "Doomsday Prepper" by the media -- and the boy (Boy) himself was autistic. James Holmes was another young, strange loner. The current bogeymen of the moment is this lone "crazy" alienated awkward young man with access to firearms, as well as survivalists/preppers in general.

  2. River Phoenix's own childhood was mired in what could be considered cult-like, his parents pressing the children into the hippie-like Children of God cult. The Children of God (Family International) were established in 1968 by David Berg, lived in isolated communes, and purported to be living out the "authentic" form of Christianity that Jesus had intended -- compare to David Koresh's Branch Davidians at Waco.

The cult allegedly advocated pedophilia
CoG was also involved in the controversial practice of "Flirty Fishing," in which women were instructed to seek out more converts by offering them sex. While Phoenix's parents later stated that they were opposed to this practice -- you have to wonder how all of this CoG stuff impacted the young boy mentally.

From an 1994 article on Phoenix from "Esquire":

"The family had had prophet problems before: They'd actually left the Children of God because its leader, David Brant Berg, began encouraging the women in his flock to seduce potential converts--a tactic known as "flirty fishing"--and proudly referred to them as hookers for Jesus. Berg also advocated incest and sex with toddlers, and mailed circulars with graphic pictures of molestation. The Phoenixes felt betrayed, and River rarely talked about the sect. "They're disgusting," he would say angrily. "They're ruining people's lives."
In his last role as Boy, was Phoenix basically "replaying" a version of his strange childhood? Is Boy the person he could have grown up to be, had Hollywood not entered the picture.

Phoenix: unable to take on "Interview With The vampire" role
There is also the significance of the name of his last movie: "Dark Blood." The actor was set to start filming "Interview With The Vampire" shortly before he died -- a role that later went to Christian Slater, who in turn donated his paycheck to two of Phoenix's favorite charities Compare Slater's actions to how Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law pitched in for Heath Ledger in "The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus." Both Ledger and Phoenix died of drug overdoses.

Depp's Viper Room
One more for you: Phoenix died in front of Depp's club The Viper Room -- on Halloween night, yet. Depp's connections with two other tragic "died too young actors," Brandon Lee (who died the same year as Phoenix) and Heath Ledger, are documented in this post. Depp is now, in a sense, resurrecting the spirit of The Crow and Lee by starring in the upcoming Lone Ranger movie -- like a Phoenix from the ashes, so to speak.

One interesting last bit about "Dark Blood," again from the Esquire article:
Last fall Phoenix filmed Dark Blood in an area in Utah reputed to be a magnet for alien visitations, which fascinated him (his latest karmic catchphrase was "Thanks be to UFO Godmother"). He told friends he'd been levitated over his bed, and he would sometimes lie on his patio and shout to the heavens, "Take me, I'm ready! What else is out there?"
What else, indeed?

The Many Syncs (And Swipes) Of "Dark Shadows"

Posted on 18:32 by omprakash

Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows" is such a problematic movie that I don't think I have the patience to watch it again for a deep analysis -- but a few syncs and general observations of note, especially in light of my post linking Johnny Depp/Heath Ledger/Brandon Lee.

First of all, "Dark Shadows" is like if every "gothic" film from the 1990s vomited its tropes back at us, including Burton doing a Xerox of Burton doing a Xerox of Burton (with tired "Catwoman" Michelle Pfeiffer thrown in for good measure). Whole scenes from such flicks as "Sleepy Hollow," "Interview With A Vampire" (it is rumored that Depp originally turned down the role of Lestat) and even "The Craft" have been lifted here -- though the subtler "swipes" and allusions are the more intriguing, in terms of the journey of Johnny Depp the Movie Persona.

Depp/Ledger/Joker/Crow Syncs:

Depp, as Barnabas Collins, recites lyrics from the Steve Miller Band classic "The Joker":

As I've pointed out before, Depp shares resonances with "Dark Knight" Joker Heath Ledger -- as well as very heavy "The Crow" connections (leading all the way up to Depp's upcoming "The Lone Ranger").

Conveniently, Alice Cooper, one of the original visual inspirations for The Crow, appears in "Dark Shadows" as himself:

Bela Finally "Teaches" Ed Wood

In Burton's "Ed Wood," Bela Lugosi teaches Wood how to do the mesmerizing hand trick...

In "Dark Shadows," Wood/Depp has seemed to have perfected it:

Does this truly make Tim Burton "Ed Wood," the maker of an inexplicably bad film?

Dark Shadows/Ninth Gate: Black Books & "The Girl"

Both Barnabas Collins and "The Ninth Gate's" Dean Corso are literally bewitched by dangerous blonds, the stories told in the engravings of old books:

Barnabas/Angelique:

Dean Corso/"The Girl":

"Nightmare On Elm Street": Full Circle

One of Depp's first film roles was in the original "Nightmare on Elm Street" -- where he was eventually murdered by Freddy Krueger:

In "Dark Shadows," Barnabas's Renfield-like slave is played by Jackie Earle Haley, who of course portrayed Freddy in the "new" Nightmare:

The Eye-Stigmata Of Johnny Depp

Barnabas bleeds from his eyes in "Dark Shadows"...

As he does in "Once Upon A Time In Mexico":

The visual look, again, reminiscent of The Crow:

And William Blake, the character he played in "Dead Man":

And is that the archetype Depp is destined to play: the dead man, Death? Or is it more like, "walker between the worlds," more like Orpheus in the underworld...or Trickster?

Or is Depp the actor -- of which his entire oeuvre is necessarily a part -- evolving through the archetypes, as in a tarot deck? Encountering seemingly the same situations...the same "scenes"...over and over...all of which, if we examine our lives, we do as well?

(The gross elitist/classist quality of "Dark Shadows," which it shares with the ill-fated "Munsters" reboot "Mockingbird Lane," will be explored in a future post.)

The 4 Types Of Comedians: Tamed, Dead, Paranoid, and Trickster

Posted on 10:19 by omprakash
Richard Pryor, circa 1982

Richard Pryor, circa 1983
Is there a "conspiracy" to "kill" Comedy? The video in question, from The Stench Of Truth video blog, is not actually saying there is a "real" conspiracy to suppress really funny, cutting-edge humor and comedians...but it's also not 100% saying that there isn't.

Look at the evidence:

Richard Pryor: Used to be cutting-edge, then did light comedies and children's movies
Robin Williams: Used to be cutting-edge, now does light comedies and children's movies
Eddie Murphy: Used to be a cutting-edge, now does light comedies and children's movies
Mike Meyers: Used to be a cutting-edge, now does light comedies and children's movies
John Leguizamo, Jim Carrey (sorry, Jim), Adam Sandler, Damon Wayans, Steve Martin, etc. etc. etc.

Robin Williams, circa 1987
Robin Williams, circa 1997
Note that when I say "cutting-edge," I mean somebody that people -- even their own peers -- were absolutely in awe of. There's an old stand-up video of Robin Williams way back in the beginning, where you can see people like Henry Winkler and John Ritter just look up at him from the audience with their mouth hanging open. Not just funny, but downright subversive.

Robin Williams, circa 1978 "Live At The Roxy"
And that's another key word to keep in mind here: SUBVERSIVE.

Is it simply a matter of aging?

No, I don't think it is.

Bill Hicks
Now, consider those comedic geniuses who choose largely not to go down the route of watered-down comedies, children's movies, and basic buffoonery:
Bill Hicks: dead
John Belushi: dead
Andy Kaufman: dead
Sam Kinison: dead
Bernie Mac: dead
Mitch Hedberg: dead

Andy Kaufman
Really, it got to the point where if there was a comedian I really liked, he was either going to die young or provide a voice in a Disney movie (never both).

Ever notice how the only other "edgy" comedians that turn away from the Hollywoodification route -- but also haven't died young -- inevitably turn to the world of conspiracy theories and other esoteric interests?

Roseanne Barr:

Has claimed to be victim of incest and MK-Ultra mind-control, as well as accusing others in Hollywood of being victims/abusers (Michael Jackson/Joe Jackson, for instance). Once stated that she believed the CIA was controlling her via chip in her head. Also tweeted that "reptile like criminals in control of our government":

Richard Belzer:

Wrote the recent guide to political assassinations and cover-ups, "Dead Wrong"

Amazon.com description of "Dead Wrong":
"For years, the government has put out hits on people that they found “expendable,” or who they felt were “talking too much,” covering up their assassinations with drug overdoses and mysterious suicides. In Dead Wrong, a study of the scientific and forensic facts of various Government cover-ups, Richard Belzer and David Wayne argue that Marilyn Monroe was murdered, that the person who shot Martin Luther King Jr. was ordered to do so by the government, and examines many other terrifying lies we've been told throughout our country’s history."

Dave Chappelle:

Mysteriously dropped out of sight at the height of his career, first taking a trip to Africa. Explained his decision to "drop out" of Hollywood as follows:
"Coming here I don't have the distractions of fame. It quiets the ego down. I'm interested in the kind of person I've got to become. I want to be well rounded and the industry is a place of extremes. I want to be well balanced. I've got to check my intentions, man.
Chappelle has also complained about being shoe-horned into the exact type of "light" comedy stuff as the "edgy" comics before him have done -- going so far as to suggest to Oprah that there was a conspiracy to emasculate actors of color in the movies:

In an "Inside The Actor's Studio" interview, he also questioned why so many people in Hollywood like Martin Lawrence were having mental breakdowns, going on to ask if conspiracy theorists are really that crazy:

George Carlin:

George Carlin's stand-up routines became far more darker, cynical, and political over the years -- this despite the fact that he took occasional "lighter" gigs over the years like the Bill & Ted movies and "Shining Time Station."

Here is how he defined "conspiracy theorists":

Dan Aykroyd:

Aykroyd considers himself a "spiritualist" and UFOlogist. In his DVD "Dan Aykroyd: Unplugged On UFOs," he had the following anecdote (via IFC) concerning him, Britney Spears, and "The Men In Black" (not the movie):
"The most fascinating (read: batshit) revelation, however, relates to the time that some “Men in Black” monitored Aykroyd’s phone call with Britney Spears. As Aykroyd spoke to his “Crossroads” co-star, he noticed the conspiracy theory mainstays observing him, but looked back a moment later to realize that they were gone. Shortly afterward, the producers of the program he was taping were ordered to shut it all down, a seemingly unremarkable coincidence until you realize that the show itself was about to totally blow the lid off this crazy UFO thing."

And there are other comedians, most notably Randy Quaid, who became a fugitive with his wife and told tales of the "Star Whackers," and Joe Rogan, who has suggested that the moon landing might be a hoax and is an outspoken proponent of psychedelics.

Now, one can certainly suggest that the common thread that links all of the above "conspiracy" comedians, including the dead ones, is that it is assumed they might have/had mental illness and/or substance abuse issues. Perhaps it was too many drugs, maybe the rigors of constant touring -- maybe something organically wrong with their brains (Barr, for example, had a traumatic brain injury as a teen). They obviously show signs of what might be interpreted as marked paranoia. Maybe if they just did that "Flubber" sequel and took their meds on a more regular basis, everything would be fine.

But even if it is that they are truly paranoid, and suffering some sort of mental malady -- and we do not know that to be the fact in every case -- could their years in a Hollywood system that on one hand praised them for their uniqueness and subversive humor, but then turned around and "drained" that unique quality out of them in favor for something more generic and "acceptable"...could this have played any role at all in their angst, in their "dropping out" of mainstream society?

Could they have successfully existed both as commercially successful Hollywood comedians AND held their integrity?

I believe there is only one way to do that, and that is to be a Trickster:

Notice that a number of these "tricksters" aren't even traditionally "comedians." No, they are not -- to actually admit it, to admit you're a comedian...no. Tricksters don't admit it. They are Adaptable. They're enigmas. They're going to make you work for it. They will tell you quite calmly that there is no conspiracy to kill comedy, or to do anything else -- they will tell you this quite calmly, looking intently in your eyes, painting your hand with whatever sticky condiment that might be available...

"Lone Ranger" Movie Poster Looks Like "The Crow"

Posted on 09:51 by omprakash
Uhhhhhh...just from a purely unfounded, superstitious, synchromystic point of view, duplicating this symbology (purposely or subliminally) just doesn't seem like a good idea, especially with morbid events already being associated with this movie: "Lone Ranger Crew Member Drowns On Set Of Johnny Depp Movie"

Bonus: If we look at the initial Joker teaser for "The Dark Knight," we see the same imagery again -- eyes and bird/bat shape -- but this time, separated out:

What is it about this particular symbolism -- bird-figure and eyes superimposed -- that leads it to be used so much, and attract such weird energy?

Horus, maybe?

UPDATE: Oh, I get it now...the "look" of Johnny Depp in "The Lone Ranger" is taken from a painting called "I Am Crow":

Depp, of course, filled in for his late friend Heath Ledger in the movie "The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus":

Oh, and here's the crow tattoo Depp received on September of this year, in specific tribute to the original Crow movie from 1994:

UPDATE 2: The Hollywood Reporter compares the image on the "Lone Ranger" poster to that of the Joker in "Dark Knight:
"...And if it looks familiar, ask yourself one question: Why So Serious? Yes, the first poster for the film features Johnny Depp's eyes and face mask makeup in a wild smear reminiscent of The Joker's appearance on The Dark Knight posters back in 2008."

It's interesting to me that the first connection THR would make is to Heath Ledger's Joker, not the Crow. I saw the connections to both, but it seems more obvious with Crow. Either way, it's still quite interesting how entwined the symbolism and stars from these 3 movies are.
